Instagram challenges are used to prompt your users to post branded content on Instagram! Users can be prompted to post either original content or provided content on their Instagram pages, along with additional instructions on tagging, hashtagging, and captioning.
The difference between Instagram challenges that call for user-created content and challenges that prompt users to share provided content, creates distinct uses for both types. User-created content is great for advertising your brand organically through the endorsement of your users, whether it’s prompting a Throwback Thursday-type post of a memory for a previous event or a post of a lifestyle pic or selfie with products from your brand.Using provided content is great when you want to get specific information out, like a lineup flyer for an event or an important announcement for your brand.
See the details below to learn how to set up Instagram challenges for your program!
How to Create an Instagram Challenge
To create an Instagram challenge, click the blue Create button at the top of the Challenges screen
Select the Instagram option in the challenge creation menu.
The first field is the Challenge Title field. Fill this in with the name of the challenge as users will see it in-app.
Fill in the start and end time in their respective fields to set the duration you would like the challenge to run for.
In the Points field, fill in the amount of points that users will be awarded for completing this challenge.
Under Points, you will see the Hashtag field. Input the hashtag you would like users to include on their post. We recommend using a hashtag that’s already in use by your brand. The hashtag input in this field will automatically be included in the challenge description.
Under the hashtag field, you will see a checkbox labeled “Require users to submit their own image”. Check this box if you would like users to post their own original content, and remember to provide ample instruction in the Call to Action field.
If you do not check this box, they will be prompted to share whatever image is uploaded as the Challenge Image to their Instagram.
Under the options fields, you will see the Challenge Image. It defaults to a stock photo, which can be replaced with the Upload Image button directly underneath it. If you have left the “Require users to submit their own image” box unchecked, thenthe Challenge Image is the one that users will be prompted to share.
In the Call to Action field, you can write any additional instructions for your users. If you have checked the “Require users to submit their own image” box, make sure that this field is filled out with specific instructions on what sort of image should be shared to complete the challenge.
When all of these fields are filled in, you can click the Publish button at the top right corner of the screen to publish your challenge out to your users!
Tips & Tricks Ask your ambassadors to tag your page in their user-generated posts. Not only will the post direct more traffic and potential followers to your page, but you’ll get a notification on your own Instagram page, and you can reshare high-quality posts to your own story! See our other article here for more tips on how to maximize your user-generated content.
Remind your ambassadors to advertise their selling discount. On both types of Instagram posts, you’ll likely want to have your users remind their friends that they can get hooked up with discounts on tickets or products when they purchase through the user. In programs with custom promo codes, you can even instruct them to add their promo code right there in the caption!
For any other questions about this feature, you can use the Submit a Request button at the top of this page, click on the blue icon at the bottom of the Admin Web Portal to activate the chat feature, or reach out to your dedicated Customer Success Specialist to learn more!
